Winkley on the Podium as Breakaway Decides Hatherleigh Opener

Bright, clear conditions welcomed the junior field to Hatherleigh for a demanding 108-kilometre contest that was always likely to reward aggression over patience. On a rolling, selective course, the race never settled into a steady rhythm, with attacks and counter-moves shaping the day from the outset.

This event carried added significance as the opening round of the British Cycling Junior Open Road Series; the national programme that runs through spring and summer before concluding at the John Richards Junior Tour in August. Early performances often reveal which riders and teams intend to influence it.

Nova Active from the Start

Our Harrogate Nova Race Team were prominent early, with Alex Box helping animate the opening phase and ensuring the team was represented as the race began to fracture. The decisive moment came when Noah Wheller (Lee Valley Youth CC) launched a bold solo move, holding clear for around ten miles and forcing the peloton into action behind.

His effort reshaped the race. Five riders bridged across to join him: local favourite Jed Claxton (Wheal Velocity), Harper Johnson (360cycling), Sam de la Mare (CAMS-MAJACO), Freddie Winkley (Harrogate Nova Race Team) and Brown. The six quickly established cooperation and crucially, a gap that the bunch could not close.

The Move That Stuck

As the race transitioned from the long opening lap onto the finishing circuits, the breakaway’s advantage held firm at a point when such moves often falter. By the time the bell sounded for the final lap, it was clear the winner would come from this select group.

Brown timed his effort perfectly in the sprint, taking the victory ahead of de la Mare, with Nova’s Freddie Winkley finishing strongly to secure third place. An excellent result in a national-level field and a promising start to the series.

A Strong Start to the Season

With attacking racing, decisive teamwork and a podium finish in the opening round, Harrogate Nova Race Team leave Hatherleigh encouraged by both performance and intent. The Junior Open Road Series now continues through the summer, where consistency will determine the final standings.
