Harry Hudson has made history, becoming the first ever Briton to win the Junior Men’s Road Race World Championship with a sensational solo victory!
Launching his decisive move with 35km still to ride, Harry stunned the field with an audacious attack and held on all the way to the line, crossing alone to claim the rainbow jersey, and a place in the record books.
A Historic Ride
The 119km race was fast and aggressive from the outset, but it was Harry’s brave solo effort that proved unstoppable. Attacking with three laps to go, he quickly built a gap of over half a minute, and though the chasing group briefly closed in, he never cracked.
As Spanish and French riders tried to mount a late charge, Hudson dug deep and refused to be caught. When the final kilometre came, the outcome was clear: Britain, and Harrogate Nova!, had a new world champion.
His teammates Max Hinds and Matthew Peace, who worked tirelessly in the bunch to keep attacks under control, crossed the line in an incredible 4th and 5th place to complete a dream day for Great Britain.
“It’s just a dream, I’m so happy”
Speaking at the finish, Harry admitted the scale of his achievement hadn’t yet sunk in:
“It’s still setting in, it’s a bit crazy. I knew my legs were good but it’s always a surprise; it’s just a dream, I’m so happy. It's certainly a big step, my best result yet.”
On the moment he chose to attack, he added:
“I just felt like it was the right time to go and I just attacked. I thought a few of us would go and create a small split but it ended up being solo and I just settled into my pace and ended up going to the line. I thought it was going to get caught a few times, but I just kept going, kept pushing and got the win.”
From Harrogate to the World Stage
For us as a club, Harry’s triumph is a source of immense pride. From his early days on Nova rides to taking on Europe’s toughest junior races. To see him now standing on top of the world, wearing the rainbow jersey, is beyond special.
Harry’s triumph is proof to every young rider that dreams are possible, that hard work pays off, and that the journey from Harrogate roads to the world stage is real.
This is only the beginning of what promises to be a remarkable career, and we couldn’t be prouder to be a part of his story.
